hong kong tram pressure guage.

hong kong tramways started service in 1904. its one of the best and cheapest ways to see hong kong island. for just hk$2, you could take a tram ride from kennedy town (west) to shau kei wan (east). you should definetly try it next time you are in hong kong.

symphony of lights - a spectacular light and laser show syncronized to music and staged every night at 8:00pm. this is the world's 'largest permanent light and sound show' as recognized by the guinness world records. on monday, wednesday and friday, the light show is in english. on the other nights, it is in cantonese. however, whilst it is not such a big deal, during festival times the light show is supplemented by fireworks that are worth seeing.

in china, screen fans were used throughout society. the earliest known chinese fans are a pair of woven bamboo side-mounted fans from the 2nd century bc. the chinese character for 'fan' is etymologically derived from a picture of feathers under a roof. the chinese fixed fan, pien-mien, means 'to agitate the air'.

fans were part of the social status for the chinese people. a particular status and gender would accord a specific type of fan to an individual. the folding fan was invented in japan in the 8th century and taken to china in the 9th century. the akomeogi (or japanese folding fan) originated in the 6th century. these were fans held by aristocrats of the heian period when formally dressed. they were made by tying thin stripes of hinoki (or japanese cypress) together with thread. the number of strips of wood differed according to the person's rank. they are used today by shinto priests in formal costume and in the formal costume of the japanese court (they can be seen used by the emperor and empress during coronation and marriage) and are brightly painted with long tassels. the chinese dancing fan was developed in the 7th century. the chinese form of the hand fan was a row of feathers mounted in the end of a handle.

joss sticks are incense, traditionally burned before a chinese religious image, idol, buddha statue, or shrine. they can also be burned in front of a door, or open window as an offering to heaven, or devas. in modern days, joss sticks can be used for any purpose, such as to enhance the smell of a room, or to light fire crackers.

joss sticks are religious materials in china, india, vietnam, thailand, taiwan, myanmar, cambodia, korea, japan, the philippines and others.

the word "joss" is derived from the latin deus via portuguese.

one more from the hongkong flower show. it was drizzling slightly. the rain drops refreshed all the flowers in the park, bringing out strong contrast in them.

blue-throated macaw

the blue-throated macaw is a rare treat to behold, being one of the rarest birds in the world.
as a pet the blue-throated macaw is very docile and affectionate, but also quite intelligent and inquisitive. wild birds were found to be shy and reclusive but the hand-fed birds are very outgoing and talkative. chewing and performing acrobatic antics are favorite activities as is exploring their surroundings with their tongue and beak. they are very elegant and inclined to be much more graceful in movement than other macaws.
